Spreadsheets with Primary Six
As part of the Specialist School Programme, this term I will be working with a Primary Six class from Forthriver Primary School. The aim is to develop their skills using spreadsheets. At the end of the ten week programme, all pupils should have the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets.
They should also be able to use the spreadsheets to produce a series of charts.
The sessions will be held at Mountcollyer Resource Centre on a Tuesday afternoon from 1:00pm - 2:00pm. On completion of the work every pupil shall receive a certificate to recognise how their skills have developed.
Internet Safety Evening
Mrs J Clarke organised an Internet Safety evening as part of the Extended Schools initiative. This event was held on Tuesday 28th November 2006 and was conducted by Inspector Jim Callaghan, a Community Police Officer. The aim was to increase parents‘ awareness of websites their children may be using and the dangers associated with them. We hoped that with more knowledge the parents would feel more confident about both themselves and their children using the Internet.
As the ICT Coordinator within school, I was asked to introduce the evening and provide some information regarding the school‘s efforts to raise awareness of Internet Safety. Currently a group of Year 8 pupils are completing an Internet Proficiency Scheme and this hopefully will be made available to more pupils at a later stage.
The presentation was extremely successfully and Inspector Callaghan conveyed the message with high impact using a series of short video clips. All those who attended left with a feeling of increased knowledge and an aim to monitor their children‘s Internet use more closely.
In order to evaluate the success of the evening a selection of parents were asked to complete a questionnaire. Responses given were extremely positive with comments including:
"The evening was very useful and made me aware of things that happen, which I never really understood."
"I think the evening was a very good idea as I use the PC myself and I have learned a lot by listening to the dangers!"
"I don‘t know a lot about computer but I will be keeping a closer eye on the kids. Also a big thank-you for this information!"
