Tales of the Transition Teachers

Miss D Fryer

Mrs Dillon and I are the new transition teachers in the Girls‘ Model. We teach both in the GMS and in the 18 primary schools in the area. We try to make the move from primary to ’big‘ school as easy as possible by letting the children get to know some secondary teachers to find out that teachers are not as scary as they seem (honest).

We teach music, ICT and drama and help small groups with numeracy and literacy skills and we also take after school drama and ICT clubs - we are really very busy. Oh and don‘t forget the FriendStop at the Breakfast Club on a Tuesday morning for the Year 8 pupils. The girls can come along and make new friends and have a nice breakfast. If they have some worries about school they can talk to a transition teacher about them.

As a past pupil of the Model I was delighted to come back ’home‘ and start working in a school that I had such happy memories of. I worked in Springhill Primary for the last eight years and in Harmony Primary for a year before that and I loved being a primary school teacher so now I feel I have the best of both worlds as I get to teach in the primary and in the secondary school.

Mrs Dillon is trained as a secondary teacher and has just moved here from Castlederg High School so she is used to working with older students but she is really enjoying working with the younger children in the primary schools.

So if you see us in the corridors feel free to say, ”Hello“ and tell us who you are and you will be met with a smile because we really are a friendly pair.
