One of the highlights of the science department in year 8 is the visit to the Belfast Zoo where the pupils get to learn more about the animals as well as seeing them close up. All year 8 classes get the opportunity to participate; however, on the 9th October it was 8VE‘s turn to make the trip. The very excited class were lead by Dr Davidson and Mr McCoo.
The fun filled trip was packed with adventure, as firstly the girls got to attend a talk where they learned more about the animals and their habitats. They even got to see a huge tarantula, a snake, a variety of insects and even a frog! The zoologist who gave the talk then passed round the creatures for the class to see close up, and allow anyone who was brave enough to touch them. The girls really enjoyed this part of the trip, Tammy said:
”The talk was really funny, we saw lots of insects that I have never seen before and I even got to hold some of them! The zoo was a good day and we learned lots of cool stuff too!“
The class then walked around all the different animal enclosures, using their orientation skills to follow the map, Mrs Chism would have been proud!!! One of the highlights was definitely seeing Lily, the lion. This is the first of its kind to be born in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately the day wasn‘t all about having fun as the girls had to complete a worksheet recording the habitat, adaptations and dangers of a range of the animals. This information was then used when they got back to school to write an assignment. Despite this, it was a greay day to remember and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
