Local Artist visits the Model...
Belfast born, P J Lynch is a well respected illustrator, who has won numerous prestigious awards for his detailed illustrations for childrens‘ books. In October, we were delighted that he came to speak to our GCSE and A level students.
He is a quiet man but has a sparkling sense of humour that comes out in his illustrations. The level of detail in his work is exceptional and it was clear that he sets himself high standards. We were blown away by his work, but he is always trying to improve upon his work and agonises about whether he overworks the pieces.
He uses photography as a source for his work, asking family and friends to pose for him so he gets the position just right and the lighting just as he needs it. He has also found that new technology has helped him to develop his work and he uses Photoshop regularly.
He explained his methods of working and showed examples of his work and of himself at work. The students were very impressed and he let them know that there are many more Ulster artists who make their living through book illustration. He answered many of the students‘ questions before having to leave.
He is currently working on huge billboard sized illustrations for W5 which will be displayed near Christmas. It is certainly impressive to meet someone so talented and find that he is a local boy. It lets us know we can all aspire to achieve.
