Shankill women‘s‘ Centre are a locally based group who provide education for women. They kindly came into school and took Year 11 Child Development classes for 2 sessions.
During this time pupils focused on what it‘s really like to become a young parent and what are the advantages and disadvantages of it. This is part of the Child Development course. All pupils enjoyed learning about the issues that some young parents in today‘s society face like:
Depression
Not being able to cope
Parents disowning you
Not being able to continue education
It wasn‘t all work as we got to watch a film based on true events that were connected to our topic. Afterwards we had many class discussions of what we though of the film and what we thought of becoming a parent at a young age.
The Shankill Women‘s‘ Centre members were very helpful and answered any of the questions we had and gave us insight into what it‘s like to be a teen mum. All of the year 11‘s came away from class learning something new and interesting.
