In November and December the year 8 classes study the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. As part of this course they have to analyse the witches, and the role they play in Macbeth. To understand this fully, 8NE decided to become witches for a day! They dressed up in wonderful costumes wearing hideous make-up and using left-over props from Halloween parties!
They worked in groups of 3 people and performed the Witches’ Chant. They had to pretend to put things in a cauldron – things like: A dog’s tongue, a frog’s toe, a newt’s eye and various parts of babies, dragons and snakes! Needless to say no-one fancied eating their lunch after this performance!
Overall this was a very successful lesson and 8NE all achieved level 5 or above for their dramatic performances. The only negative thing was some of the class couldn’t wash off the face-paint and spent the rest of the day getting very weird looks from teachers and other pupils!
The favourite part of the chant seemed to be when they all shouted:
“Double, double toil and trouble,
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.”
Well done 8NE!
